We've had some real internet problems here. Sometimes it works.....sometimes it doesn't! Let's just say AT&T is NOT the company of choice up here! Anyway, we've had a wonderful two days with our friends Darrell and Connie from Bartlesville, OK. We go way back to our college days! They are here for a tour with an RV group and are staying at a campground in Jersey City. We met up yesterday morning at the Empire State Building. We hardly had to wait at all! As we were waiting to go through security, a guy was going by in the "already have a ticket" line and handed us a printed ticket and said one of their people didn't show up and he didn't want to waste a ticket!! We thanked him but were a little nervous since we were afraid it wasn't real but after we went through the admission place it was good! Happy Birthday to me!!! After looking at some of the exhibits we headed to the top. It was a beautiful day and it wasn't windy at the top. I could have stayed up there all day, taking in the view.
Here we are with Connie and Darrell Carver.
After coming back down we decided a quick trip to Macy's was a good idea since it was about a block away. Conrad and Darrell decided to find a chair outside and wait. We made a quick trip through the store and took a ride on one of the original wooden escalators. Yeah, we were typical tourists and had to take pictures!
From there it was on to Times Square. It's not quite as bright during the day. We went to the Visitor's Center there and it was real interesting. Did you know that the confetti that is dropped on New Year's Eve are little squares of paper that people write the hopes and dreams on and are saved all year for the next ball drop!
Next stop.....Columbus Circle at the south end of Central Park. We headed up to the Dakota Apartments where John Lennon lived and Yoko Ono still lives. It's a beautiful building and I'd give anything to look inside. It's a quick walk to Strawberry Fields.
We took the subway back to Times Square for a birthday dinner at Bubba Gump's. I know, I know, it's a chain but I love it. We asked for a window table and only had to wait about 5 or 10 minutes. After we finished eating, our waiter came out and he announced it was my birthday and told everyone I was 21. Think they believed it? Then he said my dream was to dance on Broadway and it was right outside the window. They sang and gave me ice cream! Of course, I had to eat it to be polite!! It was a great day.
We walked 8.33 miles by the time we got back to our apartment.
This morning we got to our meeting place a little early so walked around and checked on the protesters. Some were still in their sleeping bags under a tarp. The street carts with food were all lined up across the street from them. Of course, the police and news media were all around. It was a much smaller group. We saw them on Tuesday which was their biggest day. We met Darrell and Connie at Ground Zero and headed to the Brooklyn Bridge (again) and walked halfway across this time. Another beautiful day and lots more pictures.
Other sites today were South Street Seaport, the NYC Library, Chrysler Building, Grand Central Terminal, Greenwich Village and Washington Square. The library is HUGE and absolutely gorgeous. You need to google it and see for yourself. Grand Central is the same way. Greenwich Village is, well, Greenwich Village. Another group of protesters were there and most looked to be students at NYU that is right there. That group had a little different feel than the ones near Wall Street. Police and news media all around here too. We walked around the area, stopped for pizza then headed back to Brooklyn.
The picture above is the Dakota Apartment Building.
This is the Chrysler Building - one of my favorites!
We're tired puppies tonight so it's off to bed. See you tomorrow............
Conrad and Linda
